Guatemala Education Sponsorship Program

Through Divine Providence, missionary Emilia Hennemann met Florinda Garcia through a Spanish language course. Their families immediately began working together to preach the Gospel and serve the poor in the City of San Jorge, Sololá, Guatemala. These works opened the doors to a whole world of children in need.
All kids should be able to take for granted a good education, but many of the children in the village of San Jorge do not have this opportunity. What prevents them from obtaining an education is a lack of money for the basic needs of school supplies, uniforms, basic food for literal thought, and transportation costs. This can leave families in a cycle of poverty for generations.
One day while on a home visit to check on the project of building a kitchen for a widowed mother of ten kids, Florinda realized that their children had been unable to attend school for these reasons, and in particular, that their two high school-aged children could not read or write.
Thus, a sponsorship program in collaboration with the local Diocesan Caritas (Catholic Charities) was born to offer children in need a good education and an opportunity to learn about God’s unique and eternal love for each one of them. Along with Emilia and her husband Nick, fellow missionaries Brad and Rachael Schmitz decided to get involved in the project.

- School registration, supplies, uniform and books.
- Attendance at an after-school program with a snack and extra tutoring.
- Saturday catechism class with a snack.
- Regular reports on your child’s progress and communication with your child.
- Regular home visits to check on the family and build collaboration.
