More Than A Bridge

Last week, we built a small bamboo bridge for the Diego family. The father, Rommel, is sick and cannot walk well. Because of this, it is hard for him to leave the house. It is also hard for the children to go to school. When it rains, a small canal next to their house floods. It became difficult and dangerous for the family to cross, especially for the little kids.

To help them, I went to my friend who owns bamboo and asked him if he could give me some. He is very kind and generous; he gave me all the bamboo that I needed for free.

It was a small and very simple project, but it can change a family’s life. Now they can cross the water without getting wet. The children can go to school safely. Rommel can also cross the bridge to reach the street and practice walking to get better.

Why did I share this story with you? I shared it because it is a beautiful example of God’s unconditional love for us. In fact, Jesus is just like that bamboo bridge.

When God first created us, there was no distance or separation between Him and us. We could come to Him anytime we wanted, and we could talk to Him freely as our friend and Father. However, everything changed when we chose to disobey God’s ways and live for ourselves.

Our sin and wickedness created a huge, deep gap between God and us.

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.” Technically, this means we all deserve to be separated from Him forever. But because God loves us so much, He gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, to us! (John 3:16)

Jesus came to earth to become our bridge. By dying on the cross, He paid the full price for our sins and took our punishment upon Himself. He closed the huge gap so that we can approach the Father once again and live with Him forever. Because Jesus died and rose again from the dead, that terrifying gap has completely disappeared for those who trust in Him. Now, we can freely walk across the bridge and enter the house of our Heavenly Father.
