First Weeks in Costa Rica

Hi! In this blog post, I’m going to tell you about some of the things we’ve done here in Costa Rica since we got here. Things have been really busy and crazy, so I will keep this post kinda short. Anyway, here it is!

As some of you know, when we got here, we were able to rent out a house right next to the other FMC missionaries here. So far, it’s been great, and it suits all our needs well. It is located about a 10-20 minute walk (depending on who’s walking) from the church, and there is a grocery store even closer than that. This makes it quite convenient to shop, because back in Louisiana, you have to drive at least 20 minutes just to get to Walmart.

Some of you are probably wondering what ministries we’ve helped with here. Well, the other missionaries here have already started many ministries, so we have been following their lead.

On Monday nights, we have English class for some Costa Rican high school students at a pizza place nearby. We are able to teach them little bits of English via games and interaction. While doing this, we are also able to learn more Spanish.

There is also a daycare that is run by the nuns here. They have kids that range from pre-k to (I think) 6th grade. So, we went there, met all the kids, performed a play for them, and ended it with a game of soccer. They insisted on “Gringos VS Ticos,” which was fun.

Another time, we put together diarios. These are bags with an assortment of flour, rice, beans, sugar, coffee, and much more that are put together via mass production by all the missionaries.

What the missionaries usually do is take the diarios to another town and hand them out to the really poor people while visiting them. But it was storming pretty badly, so we brought them to the nuns in that town to distribute on a clearer day, and also had a really nice visit with them.

After we got home later, the nuns sent us a picture of all of our carefully assembled diarios unpacked and in grouped piles. They just wanted to do it a little differently!

So, all this being said, we are settling in quite nicely, thanks to all of our wonderful mission partners. Truly, we could not do it without you guys and can’t thank you enough. We are praying for all of you guys and hope you will do the same for us!
