How is God calling ME to serve HIM?

I often find myself brainstorming about different ways that I could be serving God. I even get distracted by watching and hearing stories about how others are serving Him. I start to get down on myself comparing the “little” things that I am doing to the “big” things that others are doing. The theme that God is speaking to me in 2013 is “ask me what I expect of you”. 

So often I am using my own weak understanding and ideas rather than asking God what He would like me to do. Many of us have encountered different people in our lives who want to help. They are so eager to help and serve, yet they do not listen to the directions you give them. Is that really helpful at all?? You ask them to please paint the wall and they are convinced that sweeping and mopping the floor is more important and more urgent. It can be so exhausting to lead people who are unwilling to be lead. I have to ask myself, is that what I have been doing with God? And the answer is yes, I have. I have been whining to God telling Him how much I want to serve Him and how I desire to be useful. Yet I do not joyfully do the little things that He places in front of me every day. I have been unwilling to be lead. 

God really convicted me and showed me that it really is not about me – it is about HIM! If I really want to be useful and serve Him, I need to ask Him what He wants me to do, follow His directions, and trust that what I am doing is enough because it is what He asks me to do. If I am really aiming to love and serve God, then it matters very little what others think of the “work” I am doing – I am not doing it for them anyway.
